so here i am in croatia, last month, on a ferry heading for dubrovnik. was stunning scenery. unfortunately it wasnt as warm as it looks. i would have loved to have a swim..but it was too cold.

The Amalfi Coast... in winter

I decided that for Emilys birthday we should go the amalfi coast... the playground of the rich and famous, beach resort and overun by british tourists in the high season. we went in winter. and it was very pretty, but also very cold. it gets dark at 4pm which is quite a change from melbourne at the moment. but perhaps in winter the coast is prettier at night.. with the twinkling lights and stars. we stayed at a bed and breakfast in sorrento for two nights, and then spent 2 night further along the coast at a place called agerola at the youth hostel. agerola is above 16k above amalfi. you take a bus up into the hills from amalfi. only one night did i make the mistake of sitting at the back of the bus - with the windy narrow roads this was not a good idea at all, and i was glad to get off the bus that night. we are now back in rome, sharing an apartment with a few other people.

Emily and I are in Rome! We've just had our first coffee Italian style - you order and pay at the register, you're then given a ticket which you give to the barista- and then you stand and drink it at the bar. The coffee was lukewarm (I'd been told to expect that) but the flavour was fine.
The place where we are staying is really lovely - it's called the Beehive. We're here one more night and then head to Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast. Yesterday we had a big walk around Rome which included a visit to the Colloseum and the Trevi Fountain.

I'm 25 today ! A quarter of a century. The last 25 years have been pretty good, bring on the next! I'm off to Italy in 4 sleeps... Check back here for Emily and I's adventures.... Rome, Amalfi, Naples, Florence, Siena, Pisa, Venice....
