The Amalfi Coast... in winter

I decided that for Emilys birthday we should go the amalfi coast... the playground of the rich and famous, beach resort and overun by british tourists in the high season. we went in winter. and it was very pretty, but also very cold. it gets dark at 4pm which is quite a change from melbourne at the moment. but perhaps in winter the coast is prettier at night.. with the twinkling lights and stars. we stayed at a bed and breakfast in sorrento for two nights, and then spent 2 night further along the coast at a place called agerola at the youth hostel. agerola is above 16k above amalfi. you take a bus up into the hills from amalfi. only one night did i make the mistake of sitting at the back of the bus - with the windy narrow roads this was not a good idea at all, and i was glad to get off the bus that night. we are now back in rome, sharing an apartment with a few other people.

Roma

Ciao bellas!

Emily and I are in Rome! We've just had our first coffee Italian style - you order and pay at the register, you're then given a ticket which you give to the barista- and then you stand and drink it at the bar. The coffee was lukewarm (I'd been told to expect that) but the flavour was fine.

The place where we are staying is really lovely - it's called the Beehive. We're here one more night and then head to Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast. Yesterday we had a big walk around Rome which included a visit to the Colloseum and the Trevi Fountain.

vote now...

With minutes to spare, I just put my votes in for the ABC's my favourite album poll. It was a tough call but I managed to narrow it down to six, in no particular order:

Odelay - Beck
IV - Led Zeppelin
Dig Your Own Hole - Chemical Brothers
Roseland NYC - Portishead
Decksanddrumsandrockandroll - Propellereheads
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Where are the Stones, Beatles, Waits, Dylan, Brown, Hendrix etc you ask? I know it's disgraceful but out of those guys i only have a couple of best of cd's, which I don't think count. I've never been able to decide where to start in buying their best albums.

I chose these albums because of all the ones I own they've had the most playbacks. And a couple are pretty much worn down to nothing. Did anyone else vote and what did/would you vote for?

I can save this starfish

I was just thinking about the story about the man standing by the side of the ocean, and a pile of star-fish, throwing star-fish back into the ocean. Another guy came by, and said, "What are you doing? You'll never be able to save them all". And the man replied, "That may be true - but I can save this one".

The story resonates with me because it suggests we can all make the world a better place in our own little way - not just on the grand scale.

We saved Ruby from possible euthanasia - but unfortunately we cannot save all the strays and unwanted cats and dogs out there. And the hard thing is to be content with that - to think - we may not be able to save any more - but we've made a difference for her.

mega bill of doom

What do you get when you haven't been paying for your gas for 18 odd months? That's right several letters addressed to the former tennant of your house and then one addressed to 'THE OCCUPANT'.

It's seems that when we moved house we neglected to have the gas 'connected'. But have been using it the whole time. We thought that we had connected both gas and power through "company a" but after we got the letter from "company b"we went through the bills and guess what, no gas bills. D'oh.

So a couple of phone calls (and roughly an hour on hold) later, we've rectified the situation situation with "company b" and once they have calculated what we owe we'll be getting a big, fat, motherfucker of a bill.

How much do you reckon it will be for?

It's easy to point fingers, so I blame Margaret Thatcher and bastards who copied her idea and decided to privatise the power companies in Victoria. If there was only one gas company and one electricity company I would never have been under the impression that both utilities were connected through the same company. Though in Maggie's defence i am still a dumb-ass.

How does therapy and psychology produce change? Time heals.. but possibly therapy plants the seeds of change, and over time, with enough attention and nurturing, change happens, even if you don't really know how you got from where you were to where you are now. You've grown.

No matter how far I go, my feet will carry me home

My new home away from home is the Gravy Train Cafe in Yarraville. I have been there daily for the past three days now. It is clear then that it is writing time. Writing in a cafe is perfect for me. There are no distractions - such as the internet and cat, and they have coffee.

It's always hard come essay writing time to keep your emotions in check. A little bit of stress is good because it motivates you and helps you work. Too much stress and you are parylysed by it - and are unable to work. And you procrastinate - which only fuels the stress levels - but you deal with that by making excuses for why you are not working - which really just covers up the fear that your essay is going to be crap anyway. It would be great if I just had a mental rake - that would clear all that crap from peoples consciousness - and they could sit down to work happily.

Almost cleaned up a few pedestrians today. Was cycling quite happily along on my way to uni - when suddenly all these pedestrians stepped out in front of me. The light was green, I had right of way, but these guys just stepped on out and started crossing in front of me. I was so shocked that I didn't even think to ring my bell! Luckily I didn't hit a pedestrian, and was not hit by a car doing a right hand turn - but that's not to say I didn't swear a little!

Our easter weekend wast spent with Sarah's family up in Eldorado and Wodonga, as it was Emily's last weekend in the country before she flew out to Ireland and beyond on Tuesday night.

Hopefully she'll be our new special guest blogger, with tales of her adventures and I'm guessing plenty of photos. Hope you have a great time Em!

Back to easter, we spent our time eating and then eating chocolate. Interspersed with bouts of badminton and Lomo phography, then a little more chocolate. And somehow we managed to come back with more chocolate than we took away, bonus :)

Don't you love it when politicians are put under the pump. They should be banned from using the phrase "i don't recall" and instead be made to basically lucky-dip their answer. Who cares about the truth and justice at least we'd get a few straight answers once in a while but it would be far more entertaining.

imagine this: 'I'm sorry Minister but we can't accept that response so you'll have to (a) toss a coin, (b) spin the wheel, (c) use the magic 8-ball (d) ask the audience. or just take the cash!' well maybe not take the cash, after all that's usually why their under the pump in the first place.

I'm not sure if I'd rather see that or just to see someone squeal for once. 'I didn't bribe Saddam, it was all Ted's* idea. He made me.'

* disclaimer - If there is a Ted under investigation in this whole AWB thing this is not him. This is a made-up Ted created for the purposes of this blog. Besides I don't know any of this imaginary Ted's dealings or involment with the AWB or any other parties. In fact I don't recall whether I have or have not known anything about this Ted or any other Ted's, real or ficticious, at any particular time.
